The Role of Technology in the Market for Decorative Items

Technology will take decoration to the next level

Decoration, be it interior or exterior, has come a long way. Decorative items and embellishments are no longer just about wall posters, flower vases, wind chimes, and showpieces. A major enabler and catalyst behind this advancement is technology. The field of technology has brought forward innovation and artistry while taking functionality to the next level. And the craft of decorations is no exception. There has been some serious refinement in ergonomics and practicality of decorative items, thanks to modern technology. Some prominent improvisations and enhancements with respect to decoration include:

The push for holographic displays. 3D projections and holograms not only look cool but also help in several ways. One existing use of holograms is seen in high-end restaurants where holographic menus pop up on the table at the touch of a button. In some cases, sensors that can detect the presence of people seated on the table replace the need for buttons to automatically display the menu. With the emergence of virtual reality (VR) and other awesome tech, holographic displays will soon be part of everyday furniture like dining tables, sofas, chairs, etc. In the future, the kitchen slab will tell you what’s inside the refrigerator through holograms.

Carve your own showpieces through 3D printing. At present, we are at the mercy of the designs available in the market. But with 3D printing, decoration aficionados will be able to turn abstract ideas and designs into reality. Want a dragon-shaped doorknob? Use your 3D printer and build one.

Biodegradable decorative items. If an ornate item breaks for some reason, it becomes useless and we throw it away. But the problem with such broken articles is that they are not recyclable. Taking cues from 3D printing, decorative items of the future will be made from biodegradable materials. Taking it a notch higher, showpieces of the next generation will be moldable, i.e., you can convert your broken artifact into something else.

Décor pumped up with gizmos. Many smartphone makers have released wireless charging platforms which allow people to charge their phone by simply placing it on some surface or platform. This idea will soon go mainstream, allowing your guests at home to use the serving tray for charging their devices. Expect more mind-boggling features like in-built USB ports, thermostat control, universal remotes that work on all devices, and whatnot. All of these packaged in your decorative items.

The astounding outcomes mentioned above just scratch the surface of the synergy between technology and decoration. While such amazing capabilities may be considered as ‘wants’ instead of ‘needs’ at present, they will eventually become a necessity. Our reliance on technology has grown manifolds, making us highly prone to comfort and simplicity. We people refuse to grind if the same job can be done hassle-free without using our minds, a desire technology has made possible. Tech shall soon penetrate every field and domain in existence, and everyone out there concurs. Though such hi-fi decorative items may sound funny or absurd, the day isn’t far when your home would look incomplete and out of place without that Bluetooth-connected wind chime and sensor-enabled, color-changing blinds. This is a preview of the extent to which technology has enslaved design & decoration.
